When a human being comes to the outer world from a mother’s womb, he is considered as another creature in this world. What makes him different from other creatures is the concept that he has higher intellectual thinking capacity which is found rarely in others. A human being can evolve this capacity to fulfill his spiritual and social desires. Nowadays you can see many ads which tell you to use their products to increase the brain’s capacity. But you know that they are not going to help you. We have a solution for this in Sanatana dharma as an upanayana.

Why Upanayanam is performed?
Our Rishis found a unique spiritual way to improve our intellectual capacity, which is called Gayatri mantra. That authority gaining ceremony is called as Upanayana.

There are significant meanings behind every ceremony in our Sanathana tradition. Let’s not follow our customs with ignorance. Understanding the science behind the rituals strengthens the faith in the tradition and also devotion to the divine
When is Upanayanam performed?
The appropriate time for Upanayanam is when a boy becomes eight years old. In the worst case, it’s allowed until he completes twelve years. Normally the boy’s first eight years of life are surrounded by materialistic desires. After that, he should be encouraged and trained to think beyond the materialistic world. This training includes waking up early, doing sandhyavandanm and chanting the Gayatri mantra at least ten times a day. This will bring discipline in a boy’s life and helps to achieve success in educational and professional life as well.
What are the important rituals in the upanayana ceremony or thread ceremony?
There are four very important aspects of Upanayana ritual. Those are
Matrubhojanam
Nireeksanam
Yagnopavitdharam
Brahmopdesha
MathruBiksham
Matrubhojanam : Matrubhojanam means having food from the mother’s hand. Till the time of 8 years, the boy uses to depend on the mother for every other work. From now he should be trained to be self-dependant. Here In this ritual, for last time he can have food directly from his mother’s hand. After Upanayanam he should eat food by himself.
Nireekshanam : Nireekshanam means seeing each other. Till the day of upanayan father and son’s relation was limited to this particular status. On the day of Upanayanam father should see son as his shishya(sudent), and son should see father, as his guru. The moment in which both father and son see each other as Shishya and guru should be auspicious. That’s why we find a good muhurta for that ceremony. with Veda mantra chanting and elders blessings at that moment to make that ceremony more auspicious.
Yagnopaveetha Dharana: Yagnopaveetha is a sacred thread made by cotton or grass called munja. The boy is entitled to wear Yagnopaveetha on the day of Upanayana. It always reminds us of spiritual practices, which should be performed by us.
Bramhopadesha : Brahma means Veda. Here particularly its Gayatri mantra. Upanayanam is an auspicious ceremony in which the father gives Gayatri mantra upadesha to his son. After that, he receives Bhiksha from elders and starts his days as Brahmachari.
Yagnopaveetha Dharana: Yagnopaveetha is a sacred thread made by cotton or grass called munja. The boy is entitled to wear Yagnopaveetha on the day of Upanayanam. It always reminds us of spiritual practices, which should be performed by us.
MathruBiksha : The boy should ask Bhiksha from elders before having food. He should also ask Bhiksha from his mother by saying “Bhavati Bhiksham Delhi”. When he asks Bhiksha from other elders like Purohit, grandfather, etc, they should say “Bhavan Bhiksham Dadtu”.
